Sausage Salad! Mmmmmmm.

Bayerischer Wurstsalat

No thanks.

Thin-sliced, floppy sausage thing with onions and celery pieces scattered around.

I guess it wasn’t disgusting. But something about the weird flavor, combined with the gross texture (and possibly the idea of eating a big sausage salad), just made this unappetizing once we got it home. The photo on the cover looks remarkably like what’s inside, so I’ll give them points for that.

Worst. Lasagna. Ever.

Gross Lasagna

But it’s only three Euro!

The cheese melted as if it was made entirely of soft plastic. And the meat inside was not good. Just not good. I was going to post a photo of the cooked result, but the picture is poor enough to make it look like it might be delicious.

It would be irresponsible of me to deceive you.

Just For The Record…

We brought some board games to a nearby bar and played Connect Four and Go Fish. But before I get into that, I need to explain something.

Ever since I’ve known Alissa, she’s beaten me at Connect Four. Every time. Or maybe I’d manage to squeak out a tie. I’ve beaten her once, a few years later, but then I went promptly back to losing. Was it a fluke? Was she especially tired that day? Nobody knows. But I swear it happened.

This time, I got photographic evidence.

Connect Four

She’s not smiling because she won.

I just realized that there’s no proof I was red. But I swear I was. Also, you can see how she threw in an extra black piece to make it look like I didn’t win with red. Don’t fall for her lies.

This is in a nearby park. There are four of these boards, with heavy plastic pieces that come above my knee. It’s a little surreal to walk around the pieces.

Sorry for the awful photo. EDIT: It’s artistic. I apologize for nothing.

The American Way of Life

When you think of “America”, what do you think of? Here’s a list the top 11 things, off the top of my head.

  1. Apple pie
  2. Popcorn
  3. Stars and stripes
  4. Super-sized bag of chips
  5. Cheese cake
  6. Milkshakes
  7. Buffalo wings and dip
  8. Statue of Liberty
  9. Sour cream
  10. No. 7 Cola
  11. Hot dogs in a jar
American Life

Nailed it.

We picked up some chicken nuggets. They were low quality, but extra delicious. We also got some chicken wings, which were just awful. And we spoke in English while we ate them. It was just like being back in New York.

That Music Selection

I can’t remember exactly where we were. It was some kind of gathering, where Alissa and I had got caught up in conversations on different sides of the room. I found myself talking to a couple guys who knew just enough English for us to carry on the kind of conversations you have at cocktail parties. It went like this.

Guy: “So what kind of music do you listen to?”

Me: “Ah, all kinds, really.”

Guy: “Do you like this [name of someone I hadn’t heard of]?”

Me: Hmm. I’m not sure about that. What kind of music is it?”

Guy: “Black music! Do you like black music?”

Huh. Do we have a strange racist person on our hands? I didn’t see that coming. Maybe it was a problem of vocabulary.

Me: “Oh, like rap?”

Guy: “Black music!”

Me: “Sure I do!”

A few days later, while wandering around in the music section, I ran into this.

Oh.

Calwer-Eck-Bräu Braumeisterbier

Calwer-Eck-Bräu - Braumeisterbier

Calwer-Eck-Bräu – Braumeisterbier

On Sunday, we wandered over to Sommerfest with a couple friends. After wandering around a bit, we ended up sitting down at an outdoor restaurant area that had some shade. We didn’t realize we had just sat down at a brewery. You’d think that’d be something we’d notice.

The beer was something I had never heard of, or seen in the stores. Alissa and I ordered the same beer, because when one of the options translates to “master brewer’s beer”, you buy it.

It came in a small 0.3 liter glass (about a half a pint), but the first sip was glorious. So many hops. So much delight. I was shocked, because up till now, I’d never had a German beer that used hops properly. Yeah, I said “properly”. Hops should be used for flavor, not preservation. Their logo even has a hops plant on it!

We also tasted the darker beer, which was good too. Somehow, against my character, I drank three of these without even considering switching to a different type. We’re going to have to go back to make sure we give adequate testing time to the other options.

And can you guess how far away the brewery is from our apartment? A delightful five minute walk! When one of you guys comes to visit, we’re totally going on a brewery tour. And we’re going to bring home a mini keg.

Just spend some time reading that website. Then book a flight.

Construction TV

Shopping Center

Shopping Center

This is going up right outside our apartment. Since I’m at home all day, the banging of hammers can get a bit annoying. But it’s not bad. Plus, we get to watch it get built.

Construction

New shopping center

It’s only going to be about as high as the building next to it, so it won’t block the amazing sunlight that comes through our window in the evenings.

Construction Cranes

Construction Cranes

The construction cranes are awesome. I want to drive one. They’ve had some close calls with the building you see in that picture; there is a floodlight hanging off the side of the house that constantly gets hit by the cables hanging from the crane. There was a huge storm a few weeks ago that blew the tops of the cranes all over the place.

The photo of the construction was taken about a week ago, but we were watching since they were digging out the last of the dirt, and filling the lower section in with concrete. It’s exciting! They’re already laying rebar for the next floor.

I hope the shopping center is filled with awesome stores.

First Hausfrau Mistake

I just did a load of laundry in which I combined jeans and a bright white dress shirt.

It did not go well.

Not Everyone Likes Opera

We took a walk last night, up into Schloss park. As soon as we entered the park, we ran into a large group of people sitting around the lake. The local opera house was putting on an opera, and a large screen had been set up outside for everyone to enjoy. It was nice. We roamed around the park and played chess on a giant chess board.

This morning, I started my German homework, where I had to fill in the blank. The sentence was “Hier hört man Musik. Nicht alle Leute mögen die Musik.” (“You can hear music here. Not everyone likes the music.”)

The answer appears to be “opera”.

Ha ha ha!

Oh, and by the way, our internet went out again. A tech is suppose to come by this afternoon to look at it.

It never ends.
